Olympia Snowe to Retire from Senate

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – In a surprise announcement, moderate GOP Sen. Olympia Snowe said Tuesday she would abandon her campaign for a fourth term—a contest she was expected to win easily—because she is frustrated by a polarized atmosphere in Washington.

The move dealt an immediate blow to Republicans hoping to take control of the Senate in November by giving Democrats new hope of winning the longtime GOP-held seat.

“As I have long said, what motivates me is producing results for those who have entrusted me to be their voice and their champion, and I am filled with that same sense

Jocelyn Fong: Wash. Post Pulls Rug From Under New Electric Cars

Just as mainstream automakers are beginning to launch electric vehicle (EV) technology, The Washington Post is calling for an end to federal tax credits encouraging consumers to purchase electric cars. The Post’s editorial coincides with a Republican proposal (not mentioned in the editorial ) to repeal the tax credits, which date back to the latter years of the George W. Bush administration. …

Prominent former Democrat Representative Artur Davis talking of a switch to GOP

It looks to be pretty toxic having that “D” behind your name these days, particularly if you are a shill for Barack Obama. And to the regular rank and file Democrats I can say this with complete empathy. I feel your pain. Remember, it was only four years ago when the “R” behind your name was just as toxic.

We wrote about Artur Davis in this blog, nothing bad, I just remember him being a real Democrat, not a new Socialist-Democrat like the party has become.

Like most real Democrats that are still around these days, it appears Artur doesn’t like what his party has transformed to, and could switch sides. The Washington Post has more:

Former Democrat congressman Artur Davis, who has been a thorn in the side of Democrats in the aftermath of his loss in the 2010 Alabama gubernatorial primary, is a man without a political party….

“I’ve heard some people at the national level encouraging me to run as an independent for my old office,” Davis said, referring to the congressional seat he left to run for governor. But he said his home state makes it more difficult than almost any other state to run as an independent. “Alabama is not friendly to independent candidacies.”

Davis also suggested running as a Republican might be a viable option….

Davis said he doesn’t identify with a political party in his current role as an increasingly vocal pundit. He caused a splash recently by speaking out in favor of a voter ID law. Given that the Democratic Party regards such laws as an attempt to disenfranchise black voters, having an African-American former Democratic congressman espouse that view wasn’t exactly helpful to the party’s cause.

This week, he wrote a piece for the conservative National Review Online suggesting Sen. Ben Nelson’s (D-Neb.) retirement was due to “an exclusively liberal” Democratic Party.

Davis’s criticism of his party ramped up in the 2010 primary, when he carved out a more moderate persona….

Davis has also recently contributed money to the campaigns of two Republicans, former congresswoman Heather Wilson, who is running for Senate in New Mexico, and Mississippi Gov.-elect Phil Bryant.

Well… Artur Davis “gets it.” How about some of you Democrats that read this blog?

Bachmann Retreating to Iowa

Earlier this week we covered the Huntsman campaign’s all-in shift to New Hampshire, which demonstrates his lack of national appeal, but today we have even more interesting 2012 news: Rep. Michele Bachmann’s campaign is shutting down their Virginia office and focusing solely on Iowa – revealing her shrinking appeal.

Her national appeal, surprisingly like Huntsman’s, is declining rapidly and she’s putting all her eggs in Iowa’s socially conservative friendly basket. While the former U.S. Ambassador is counting on those independent-democrat granite state voters; the Minnesota Representative is hoping for religious-ideological caucus goers.

I have a feeling we’ll be seeing

The 2012 Race, the Origins of Modern Partisanship, and the Resurgence of Local Governance

The past week was very interesting in Presidential politics.  The darlings of the rank and file Republican Party, New Jersey governor Chris Christie and former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, have concluded it is not time to run for President. Herman Cain (who was recently labeled a racist by a Democrat strategist on CNN) has become the sweetheart of the white-supremacist, right-wing Tea Party.
