We all know that talking on a cell phone while driving could be a distraction. Except in extremely rare instances I choose not to use my cell when I’m driving. That would fall along the line of using common sense, correct? Most people I know pretty much have the same rule when driving.
We hear the big government nannies whining about cell phones and driving, claiming it causes lots of accidents and fatalities on the road, and Ray “Gimmie More Power” LaHood, former Republican and current Transportation Secretary wants jamming devices in all cars to render the cell phone useless. It’s a “public safety” issue. After all, thousands upon thousands are dying because of cell phone usage. At least that’s what the nanny’s tell us.
Some Nanny States have actually banned cell phone use in cars:
Handheld Cell Phones: 9 states, D.C. and the Virgin Islands prohibit all drivers from using handheld cell phones while driving. Except for Maryland, all laws are primary enforcement—an officer may cite a driver for using a handheld cell phone without any other traffic offense taking place.
That comes from the Governors Highway Safety Association.
So we are led to believe by big, nanny state government that cell phones in cars causes many fatal accidents and something needs to be done, right? Well, why is it then that Ray “Gimmie More Power” LaHood’s very own U.S. Department of Transportation’s statistics show this:
Since 2005, fatalities have dropped 25 percent.
It’s not a “public safety” issue, it’s just an excuse for another big government nanny state power grab that takes away yet another quickly vanishing liberty.
