Early Thursday, a crowd of 40 to 50 people jumped on cars, tried to break windows and scattered litter near the intersection of Baum Boulevard and Highland Avenue, police said. Several were cited, police spokeswoman Diane Richard said, but police released few details about the suspected vandals or their motives.
Police learned that some of the rowdy people might be affiliated with a group called Occupy Everything, Richard said. “I have no idea what Occupy Everything even means,” she said. “It seems that some of these people might have been living in a nearby vacant building.”
Some members of the group may have attended an event at the Shadow Lounge, a performance lounge that hosted a fundraiser on Wednesday evening for the Occupy Movement near where the incident took place, said the lounge’s owner, Justin Strong.
Occupy Everything printed fliers that urged people to meet in the neighborhood and “stand in solidarity with Oakland,” Strong said. “I think that refers to Oakland, Calif.,” where there have been multiple violent protests, he said.
