Surprised? The knee-jerking has begun

It happened just like I told you it would happen. At the time of this writing we haven’t heard from Obama yet, but everything else is happening just the way I told you it would. Here’s a portion of a post I wrote on Saturday:

As unfortunate as the random act of God was yesterday in Japan, it will have an effect on us too. With the building housing the Fukushima I reactor exploding, that’s all the knee-jerk crybaby’s in this country need to stop nuclear power production.

Leading the charge of knee-jerking alarmist crybaby’s is Sen. Joe Liebermann (I-CT). Here’s what he said Sunday:

Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Chairman Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) said the United States should issue a moratorium on any new nuclear power projects in light of the current crises facing Japan.

Talk about being afraid of your own shadow and overreacting to something that has nothing to do with the United States is completely chickenshit and irresponsible.

What needs to happen is the Chicken Little’s need to take massive amounts of ludes to get the knee’s to stop jerking, then take a deep breath, calm down, and look at the facts, not the rhetoric. Just like if you were sitting on a jury or on the bench.

First and foremost in the U.S. there has not been one death, not one person suffering from radiation poisoning, and no deformed babies or other health issues related to nuclear power. That is a fact.

Secondly, comparing Japan to the U.S. is ludicrous. Japan is in the “ring of fire” on a fault line that has thousands of years of history with regards to earthquakes and tsunami’s. Comparing that to building nuke facilities in the heartland of America where the possibilities of earthquakes are as close to nonexistent as you can get, is like comparing apples to oranges. It just doesn’t make sense, and defies logic.

Nuclear technology has come a long way in the 40 years or so since we last built a reactor, so has building construction, particularly in making buildings “earthquake-proof.” Placing a moratorium on nuclear energy in this country for something that is completely unrelated in another country halfway around the world is absurd.

France gets over 80% of its energy from nuclear power. Has anyone heard the French calling for a moratorium? Or shuttering their facilities? The rest of Europe gets a good amount of energy from nuclear power plants as well. Is anyone hearing anybody from Europe doing the Joe Liebermann? No, you are not.

What we are witnessing from Liebermann and people who think like him is nothing but unfounded fear. The facts clearly show the fear is unwarranted and baseless.
