Correspondence Corner With Rep. Erik Paulsen (R-MN-03)

For quite a while it seems, I’ve been focusing on the big daddy, national politics and the importance of getting rid of the worse-than-Jimmy Carter president, Barack Obama, and have been neglecting my own congressional district, Minnesota 3.

Heck, I’ve even spent more time on our summer home district held by our good friend Sean Duffy (Wisconsin 7).

That’s going to change. We won’t be ignoring (unintentionally) Erik Paulsen anymore. Paulsen has been a good congressman, much more conservative than his predecessor, RINO Ramstad.

Glancing through Erik’s record, the only thing I strongly disagree with is his vote for the children’s socialized medicine plan which taxed tobacco products in order to pay for it.

It’s still socialism, and socialism is never okay, even if it’s for “the children.” There is no excuse for it, and it has no place in this country as the constitution strictly prohibits it. You could say I’m still bitter about that vote and you’d be right. I never would have voted for it. The governments roll is not to provide for you, but to ensure you can provide for yourself.

Other than that, Erik Paulsen has been a good representative and will get my vote and support.

In this week’s installment of “Erik’s Correspondence Corner” video series, Representative Erik Paulsen (MN-03) directly responds to a question sent in from Scott in Wayzata and Lynda in Coon Rapids.

Scott, a small business owner, wrote in expressing his concerns about the tremendous burden the current tax code has placed on his ability to grow, expand, and hire. Also this week, Rep. Paulsen heard from Lynda, who called in voice her concern about the change in the President’s new healthcare law which forces consumers who use Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Healthcare Savings Account (HSA) to get a doctor’s prescription when purchasing over-the-counter medicines like Tylenol and Claritin.

Even with Good Showings in Missouri and Minnesota, Santorum Surge Still Unlikely

Several sources are predicting a Santorum surge in Missouri and Minnesota tonight, but there’s reason for pause before we order out the “Rick 2012″ bumper stickers. Caucuses depend on two things: money and organization. Santorum has neither. Despite an impressive win in Iowa, it is getting harder and harder for him to keep up, because he is second to last in the delegate count with only eight so far.   That may well change tonight, but here are some reasons to be skeptical of a Santorum win,

Judge dismisses Occupy MN lawsuit

From MPR

A district judge has dismissed OccupyMN’s lawsuit against Hennepin County.
OccupyMN protesters have been demonstrating at the Hennepin County Government Center plaza since October. The group sued the county when it prohibited camping and sleeping on the plaza.

Judge Richard Kyle dismissed the lawsuit, after OccupyMN and the county reached a settlement. As part of the mediated settlement, protesters will be able to recover their tents and personal property that was removed and stored by the county.

Hennepin County officials say the county’s prohibition on tents and camping on county property continues, and will be enforced.

Taxes in ObamaCare eliminate 14% of Tanning Salon businesses in Minnesota

See what I mean? His policies and programs do the opposite, they kill jobs, not create a job friendly environment, and ObamaCare once fully implemented will destroy this country as it has destroyed almost every country in Europe. But that’s what Obama wants. No, no! Don’t argue. If the opposite were true he wouldn’t be pursuing his policies and the Democrats wouldn’t have changed the rules using parliamentary trickery to force socialized medicine down our throats. The argument is moot.

Slightly over 14% of small business owners of tanning salons here in Minnesota have closed and the result is lost jobs and shattered dreams of regular, main street Americans who have their own businesses essentially taken from them because the government taxed them out of business. Land of the free? No such thing in Obamaland.

It’s that time of year again.  Thousands of Minnesotans begin implementing evacuation plans to temporarily relocate somewhere south and warm.  Before embarking, many make a preemptive appointment in a tanning facility to ramp up their exposure to ultra violet (UV) rays in advance. This winter, however, traveling tanners will have to look harder for a place to catch some rays — and not just in the frozen north.

Fourteen percent of indoor tanning facilities in Minnesota have gone out of business since 2009, according to the Indoor Tanning Association (ITA).  The number of professional indoor tanning salons registered with ITA in Minnesota has plummeted from 477 to 419 in less than two years. In the industry’s view, it’s no coincidence the store closures and layoffs came so soon after the federal government targeted tanning salons for tax hikes. “Once again we have our government trying to control our behavior,” said John Overstreet of the Indoor Tanning Association.  “You can’t just pick out an industry because someone views them some way and try to tax them into submission. That’s just crazy.”

It is crazy, particularly when we know what the result of these failed policies will be. We’ve had almost 100 years of failed socialism in the world, yet there are some that fit the definition of insanity and keep repeating the same actions while expecting different results.

This is socialism with a Marxist flavor brought to you by Barack Obama and the Democrat Party.

While the economic downturn has undercut consumers’ discretionary spending, the industry places more blame on the ten percent excise tax imposed as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.  The one—two punch of the untimely health care act tax and sour economy wiped out 16 percent of tanning parlors nationwide — a loss of 3,100 businesses and 24,000 jobs.  Three-quarters of tanning operations are owned by women which is three times the national average for other businesses.

“Basic economics tells you that you can’t tack ten percent on your prices without affecting demand. They’ve seen people cancel their packages, it’s definitely impacted demand and the number of customers and profitability of these businesses,” Overstreet told the Freedom Foundation of Minnesota. The tanning tax took effect in July 2010, the first tax imposed under the Obama administration’s health care reform legislation with 81 new IRS agents to enforce it. Congress estimated the excise tax on the estimated 25,000 professional tanning salons in business back then would generate $2.7 billion in revenue over ten years. The tax has raised about $37 million in the first half of the current fiscal year, putting it on course to generate less than half the $200 million in revenue projected by the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation for the first full year of collections.

Civil Liberties Group Sues City over Property Rights of Minnesotan Serving In Afghanistan

The Minnesota chapter of a national civil liberties legal group is going to court to fight for the property rights of a Winona man who’s got other battles on his hands:  He’s currently serving as a U.S. advisor in war-torn Afghanistan. The Institute for Justice (IJ) will ask a Minnesota District Court in Winona to strike down a city ordinance prohibiting Ethan Dean, now on his fifth tour of duty in the Mideast, and three other homeowners from renting out their property.

My Time in the Epicenter of the Minnesota ‘Occupy Together’ Movement

This week, while walking to classes at Minnesota State University Moorhead, I kept seeing members of the Occupy MN movement walking around with signs, trying to recruit students to go down to Minneapolis and join their protest. I decided to go talk to two of the men and get more information about their movement; more specifically, I asked why they were personally involved. They told me how they both worked at fast food restaurants and were worried about getting a better job after they graduate this year.

Phony Obama more concerned with reelection than economy

It’s not about the country and it never has been with him. It’s all about the power and pushing a quasi-Marxist agenda. Nothing else.

I thought he was supposed to be the great uniter offering Americans hope and change. As it turns out, he is the most divisive and polarizing president in the modern era that has divided this country to a place we haven’t been to since the Civil War. Good job, man!

What has he accomplished that has made life better? Anybody? I can’t think of a single thing. Have his policies, most of which are now law, eased the burden on business, and made it easier for them to expand and hire? What has he done that has benefitted the country, and made us better off than we were just a few short years ago?

[Mitt] Romney said in a statement that “it is unlikely President Obama will speak with unemployed Americans, to near-bankrupt business owners, or to families struggling to survive in this economy.”

“He is more interested in campaigning in swing states than working to solve the economic crisis that is crushing the middle class,” said Romney. “Turning this economy around will require real leadership and the experience of someone who has actually worked in the private sector.”

He’s right. Actions speak louder than words. We’ve got a lot of words from Obama and little or no action to back them up. He’s too busy campaigning for his reelection.
