Safe Boating Week

Here at Lake Minnetonka Liberty we strongly advocate safe boating skills, particularly on this lake as on weekends, especially long holiday weekends like this coming Memorial Day weekend, the lake can be become very crowded. And let me tell you from experience, a lot of those people have no business being out on the water.

I suppose this fact needs to be mentioned regarding alcohol consumption. If you’re out enjoying the sunshine and warm weather, that of course will dehydrate you and make you thirsty. Alcohol also dehydrates, so if you’re drinking, the alcohol will affect you much sooner, even if you think you don’t feel it, a breathalyzer will say different. Be responsible and use common sense.

We have a series of 8 short safe boating video’s that have posted on our sister site (Westonka Informer) produced by the Wisconsin DNR and I strongly urge all boaters to take a few minutes and watch them, whether you’re a novice or experienced, it’s always a good idea to brush up or learn for the first time.

Thin ice warning for Lake Minnetonka

Thin and dangerous ice here on the lake. Well gee, that’s a no-brainer if I ever heard one.

According to Lt. Steve Hartig of the Hennepin County Sheriff Water Patrol in Spring Park, “a number of people have gone through the ice this winter.”

If you don’t live here and know the ice and the lake, stay off. It’s dangerous with the warm weather we’ve been having. In fact, I won’t even go out on it now, and I live here.

Lake Minnetonka Ice Dive Video

So, did you take the plunge in to Lake Minnetonka yesterday morning? Aye, with the wind she was a brisk one indeed!

Nearly 900 people jumped through a hole in the ice covering Lake Minnetonka New Year’s Day as part of the annual ALARC Ice Dive.

Organizers say they were on track to break a record for divers, but a quick change in the weather may have caused some divers to stay away.

Some of the proceeds from the dive will go to the Semper Fi Fund, a non-profit set up to provide financial support to injured members of the U.S. Armed Forces.
