We’ve gone over this many times, so I’ll be very brief in repeating the reasons why Keystone must move forward.
We need oil. That’s about as brief and to the point as you can be. The oil is North American oil, not middle east oil that funds terrorists. The price will be lower and everything from our utility bills to a tank of gas will also be more affordable.
Roughly, according to CNN 140,000 new, good paying jobs, not to mention the tax revenues that will be coming in due to the new jobs and increased revenue by the oil industry. So why would anyone be opposed to this? The only reason is to intentionally hurt the economy, enter Barack Obama who does not want this to proceed due to ideological reasons. Does that sound like someone who is putting America first to you?
Let us not forget the environmental kook zealots that are against everything. Why would they be against this? Oh yeah, they want to “save the environment.” I keep asking, but they never answer. Save the environment from what? Those people keep harping about saving the environment, but they never tell you what they want to save it from, have you noticed?
Oil spills due to a pipeline malfunction? Your odds of being struck by lightning are greater than that of an oil spill due to a pipeline incident that has environmental impact, did you know that? Those are pretty good odds in my book.
Here’s something else to consider. As of 2001 there are 95,000 miles of oil pipelines in the United States, enough to go around the world just about 4 times, when was the last pipeline occurence that impacted the environment? Almost 40 years ago in 1975. Technology has improved since then. Trillions of gallons of crude, thousands of miles of pipeline, and only one incident, 40 years ago. I like those odds.
Fortunately with a pipeline, if something did happen, you can shut it off before an environmental disaster. The environmental worries are unfounded.
