Former President George H.W. Bush considered Hollywood heavyweight Clint Eastwood as a potential running mate, according to new interviews released Friday.
The University of Virginia and Bush Presidential Library Foundation released more than 350 hours of audio interviews from 50 administration officials Friday, ABC News reported. Among the revelations was that the “Dirty Harry” legend was briefly considered for the No. 2 spot.
“When we were way behind. Honestly, [Eastwood] was suggested in not an altogether unserious – Well, he was a mayor. He was a Republican mayor,” former Bush campaign chairman and Secretary of State James Baker said
Eastwood served one term as mayor of the conservative ocean side community Carmel, Calif. in the mid-1980s.
“Anyway, it was shot down pretty quick,” Baker said. “But we were looking at an 18-point deficit.” Read the rest
