A lot has been happening in Washington over the past couple of weeks, especially with the ongoing battle over the budget. But I wanted to share with you a few stories that may have fallen through the cracks.
House Votes to Stop the Backdoor Cap-and-Tax
One of the few good things to come out of the last Congress was the fact that cap-and-trade stalled in the Senate. Of course, President Obama isn’t taking this legislative defeat lightly and has instructed the EPA to try and sneak cap-and-tax through the back door. Today, the House passed the Energy Tax Prevention Act, a bill that would strip the Obama Administration of its ability to use EPA regulations to ram through its wildly unpopular cap-and-trade policy and prevent Minnesota families from facing another job-crushing tax from Washington.
High Marks from the National Taxpayers Union
Recently the National Taxpayers Union (NTU) released their annual scorecard for votes cast in the House of Representatives during 2010. This year, I was honored to have received the organization’s highest rating within Minnesota’s Congressional Delegation. You can be sure that’ll continue to fight everyday for the taxpayers, job creators and innovators that power our economy. Combined, the NTU found 234 “Big Spenders” in the House and Senate, which isn’t all that surprising when you consider Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid’s big government agenda. With a number that big, it’s no wonder that the American people sent new, fiscal conservatives to Congress last November.
Update on the Budget Showdown
As I’m sure you’ve heard, a government shutdown looms just over the horizon. The root cause of a potential shutdown is the fact that House Democrats last year failed to propose, let alone pass, a budget. Now, instead of tackling next year’s budget, we’re stuck cleaning up the mess created by the Pelosi-led Congress. However, House Republicans are working tirelessly to cut as much wasteful Washington spending as possible. Our agenda of fiscal responsibility is met with swift resistance by Senate Democrats, who care little about reducing the size and scope of government. While it’s too early to say what will happen, you can rest assured that my colleagues and I are doing everything in our power to advance our agenda of an efficient and effective government and continuing to cut spending.
As always, don’t forget to check out my Facebook and Twitter pages for more updates. Thanks for your support and have a great weekend.
Sincerely,
Erik Paulsen
