Weather Creating Bumper Crop of Potholes

Warmer days and cool nights will likely rupture local roads, creating a bumper crop of potholes. The city of Minneapolis says its crews are doing what they can to keep up, prioritizing busy roads to get greater attention.

Motorists are quick to comment on road conditions, Matthew Smith worries his car will take a beating, “Bumps and potholes, it’s tearing my car up right now. It has torn it up.”

Jennifer Barker makes deliveries for Meals-On-Wheels, she says she’s seen crews patching potholes, but has also seen those same potholes re-appear, “I think patching it isn’t going to fix it completely. From my experience, each week they get patched up and the next week there are more and more. It seems to be that it is going to need more than just patchwork.”

Steve Kotke is the Director of Public Works for the City of Minneapolis. He says in the next few weeks, with warmer temperatures, crews will be able to switch to a more permanent patching material. In the meantime, the city invites anyone who spots a monster pothole to call its 311 information line and make a report.

Timberwolves Shop Their Stadium Plan

nullThe Minnesota Timberwolves basketball team has a plan to renovate Target Center and get a new Vikings stadium built, too.

Minnesota Public Radio reports that Timberwolves executives were circulating the plan with lawmakers last week.

The Timberwolves plan includes a new regional sports authority that would acquire current facilities and build two new ones. The costs are estimated at $1.73 billion, paid for with bonds issued by the Metropolitan Council. Some of that cost includes debt that is already outstanding on other facilities.

The Timberwolves and the city of Minneapolis have been seeking a $155 million upgrade to Target Center.
