The city of Austin is cancelling a theater in the park showing of Napoleon Dynamite after the Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities complained about an offensive word. That’s just f***ing retarded
The Austin Parks Foundation has canceled tonight’s showing of Napoleon Dynamite at Republic Square because of complaints about an offensive word in the movie.
According to an email the foundation sent out:
“The Austin Parks Foundation is canceling tonight’s (Wed, 5/25) showing of Napoleon Dynamite at Republic Square. A new movie will be shown next month. A number of people contacted us objecting to a word used by actors in the movie. We didn’t recall that this word was used and we did not mean to offend anyone. Our apologies for this as well as for the last minute cancellation.”
So what is this offensive word? Executive director Charlie McCabe won’t say. But some of the complaints came from the Austin Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities, he said.
It’s not too hard guess what’s causing the trouble here. The rated PG movie — which centers on a misfit teen who tries to help his friend become class president at their high school — has angered disabilities advocates because one of the characters uses the word “retarded.” Full Story
